BRUCE'S STORY By Pauline Mcdonald

I first became aware of Bruce when he went to foster care in Sheffield and then would have to be returned to Waterfalls via a misunderstanding. So instead he went to foster care with a family who kept him for a few weeks. When they could no longer look after him I volunteered to foster him. Having only ever owning small terriers it was quite a culture shock having a big muscular dog, who on the way to my home for the first time had the most alarming wind problem!! I wondered what I had got myself in for!

We adored Bruce almost immediately and he settled in straight away but we remained focused on finding him a forever home where he could have company/attention more than we could provide him with. After a few days a work colleague reminded me that her son had just bought his first house and was looking for a dog. I mentioned Bruce and although the couple had originally wanted a Labrador, they asked to meet him.

We travelled to their home and Bruce met Tori and Scott. They seemed smitten within minutes but all parties agreed that great consideration would be given as to whether they wanted to rehome him. Within 24 hours Tori and Scott asked if they could keep Bruce for the weekend to see if he liked them and if he could settle in their home. Bruce went to visit the following weekend and had his paws well and truly under the table almost instantly as he ended up staying 5 days!

When we collected Bruce you could see that Scott and Tori didn’t want him to leave but as he had a prior vet appointment to be neutered we brought him back to Teesside. Tori and Scott missed him so much we returned him to their home the same day of his operation and he officially became Bruce Wainwright!!

He has a new bed with his name on, eats like a king, is adored and goes for his daily walks on the beach. Of course all plans of ensuring Bruce knew who was boss and only being allowed downstairs and not sleeping on the furniture lasted all of about 24 hours! Bruce now sits with Tori on the sofa and sleeps in their bedroom. He is fed charcoal biscuits to this day for his ‘wind’ problem!!!
